4.5 Modem Realization Techniques

The modems described above provide a theoretical understanding of their operation and performance. However, to realize such modems in practice, several techniques must be applied. For example, in the demodulator, the identical carrier as available in the modulator has been assumed, but how in practice is this made available? In this section, a number of key implementation techniques, required even for performance in a linear transmission environment, are reviewed. Figure 4.26a shows a quadrature-type modulator that indicates the placement of the techniques covered. Similarly, Figure 4.26b indicates the placement in the associated demodulator.
